SCHOOL WALLHANGING

or

BABY QUILT
MINI-PROJECT

Indicates newly added in September, 2001

This is a unique mini-project that can be done in a short amount of time using scraps of fabric.  The mini-project itself will span over a time of approximately five (5) weeks.

This mini-project is also unique in that it has many different options to choose from.

The first set of options are to make:

  • A school-related wallhanging (that would be a great gift for a teacher), or,
  • A baby quilt.

The second set of options allows you to choose the type of setting to put either the school-related wallhanging or the baby quilt in.  These options are:

  • A plain straight setting.  See sample 1.
  • A straight setting with sashing.  See sample 2.
  • On-point setting.  See sample 3.

With the on-point setting, there are also options as to how you lay each block!  That comes in a later lesson, though.

The third set of options are with the borders that can be chosen.  I'm going to plan this mini-project around two borders, an inner border that is approximately 2" wide and an outer border that is approximately 4.5" wide.  You can adjust these to suit yourself.

Please keep in mind that the samples given on this page are plain (made using the same "A" block), simply because the first block that is in Lesson 1 is the "A" block.   The images on subsequent pages change as more blocks are added.  It is also important to note that the center block in Sample 3 does not have to be a plain block and that a center block pattern is given at the end.

Table 1

Inner Border

3/8 yard

Outer Border

2/3 yard

Binding

3/8 yard

Backing

1 1/4 yards

Batting

45" x 45"

Fabric requirements for individual blocks are not given for this mini-project merely because there are too many options to choose from, however, the finished size of Sample 1 is approximately 34" square.  The approximate finished size of Sample 2 is 36" square and the approximate finished size for Sample 3 is 42" square.

Approximate fabric requirements for the borders, binding, and backing are shown in the Table 1, at the right.

THE BLOCKS

There are four blocks if you choose the straight setting, as shown in Samples 1 or 2 above.  There are five blocks in the on-point setting, as shown in Sample 3 above.

The size of each of these blocks is 10 1/2" and after they're sewn into the quilt, they finish at 10".

COLOR/FABRIC SELECTIONS

Recommended colors for the school-related wallhanging are primary colors:  Red, blue, green, yellow.   However, any color combination can be used effectively.

Recommended colors for the baby quilt are pastels:   Blue, pink, yellow, green.

100% cottons are recommended for the fabrics.

Ready to begin?  If so, follow the lessons given in Table 2.  No peeking at the end to see how it finishes!

NOTE: Please notify me if you find any discrepancies in the directions! Thanks!
