This is a very simple block that can be appliquéd in a short period of time, using your favorite method of appliqué. This block could easily be embellished using scraps of small fabric circles for the eyes, nose, and down the tummy. Although 3-dimensional embellishments would look great, such buttons, etc., they are not recommended for a quilt that is going to be used by a child, because of the potential danger of objects being removed and swallowed.

For help in appliqué, refer to Appliqué Tips and also Freezer Paper Appliqué.

Instructions!

  1. From the background fabric, cut an 11" square.
  2. Print off the bear pattern sheet located here.
  3. Using a piece of either blue or pink (or another color of your choice) cut 1 bear.  Be sure to add 1/4" seam allowance, if the method of appliquéing you use requires it.
  4. Lightly press your 11" background square in half, on the diagonal.  Do this in both directions.  When finished, it should look like you pressed it in an "X" pattern.
  5. Depending on which setting you're making, lay out the pattern pieces on the block.  If you're making a regular set, then lay it out on the square, using the "X" to center it.  If you're using the on-point setting, you can center it whichever direction you prefer.  Before appliquéing it down, I'd recommend laying out the A, B, and C blocks (and the apple block, too, if you made it), then placing the bear block in the position it's going to go in, and determine from there how best to center it on the block.  Refer to the quilt pictures below these directions for an idea of how the on-point setting and the regular setting both look, at this point. Note: The first image with the bear block in the center is not a good picture. The file with these quilts is on a PC that is being rebuilt and I had to make do what a close approximation. These images are to be replaced as quickly as possible.
  6. Appliqué the bear into place. If using a turn-under method, be sure to clip inside the sharp curves so that it lays down flat.
  7. Add embellishments, use embroidery stitches, or fabric circles for the eyes, nose, and tummy buttons. Please be sure to read the note in the introduction on this page that warns about using objects on a quilt for a child.
  8. Press the entire block flat.
  9. Using the "X" as the center, trim the block to 10.5".

I have two requests: 1) Since this is a free pattern, in lieu of payment, please send me a picture of a completed quilt or block when you finish, and 2) Please be sure to read my copyright notice before proceeding. I have strict (though very easy and reasonable) guidelines that users must adhere to. Thank you!

Should you run into any problems in making this quilt, or if something in the directions is incorrect, please contact me! It would be greatly appreciated!
