| THE
PROCESS |
|
This quilt is made from very simple pattern pieces, yet when
combined, the quilt looks spectacular!
These
instructions are going to give directions for making all of
the different parts that make up the quilt. Subunits
are sewn together to form units. Units are sewn
together to make blocks. Blocks are sewn together
to make rows. And the rows are sewn together to
make the quilt top. So, basically, you need to
understand that these terms are going to be used throughout
the instructions. It is important to note that a "Summary"
page is provided to tally the subunits and units needed.
These
instructions are going to go from easiest to the more
complex. But, don't let it fool you; none of the
parts of this quilt are difficult! |
|
THE BEGINNING
|
|
The
goal for this installment is to make three (3) different
units. No subunits this time! These three units
require very little sewing, therefore the next installment is
going to be available later this week.
|
|
UNITs 1
|
- Units 1 are called
Background/Star 2 Half-Square Triangles (hereafter called
B/S2 HST). There need to be four (4) of these
B/S2 HST made from the background fabric and the second
star fabric. Each B/S2 HST should accurately measure
6.5" x 6.5", unfinished.
 |
For detailed
information on making HST, refer to the HST
Tutorial found on the Web. |
- From the Background Fabric
(hereafter called BF), cut 2 (two) 7.5" x
7.5" squares.

- From the Second Star Fabric
(hereafter called S2), cut 2 (two) 7.5" x
7.5" squares.

- Using a pencil or pen, draw
a line diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner
on the wrong side of each of the two S2 squares.
- Using one (1) S2 square and
one (1) BF square, place them right sides
together. Pin them to one another, making
sure to line them up evenly, one on top of the other.
- Sew a scant 1/4"
on each side of the drawn diagonal line. A
"scant" 1/4" is a few threads short of
being a full 1/4". Doing this helps to assure
accuracy!
- Press the sewn unit
flat.
- Cut the sewn unit
from step 6 apart on the drawn diagonal line. This
makes two (2) B/S2 HST. Press the seams
toward the BF.

- Using an acrylic ruler, trim
these two B/S2 HST to exactly 6.5" x 6.5",
making sure to keep the diagonally sewn seam going
straight from corner to corner.
- Pick up the other BF
7.5" square and the S2 7.5" square. Repeat
steps 5 through 9 to make two more B/S2 HST.
- Accuracy Check:
There should be a total of four B/S2 HST at this point.
|
|
UNITs 2
|
It cannot
get much simpler than this one!
- Cut four (4)
6.5" x 6.5" squares from BF.

- Cut four (4)
6.5" x 6.5" squares from S2.

- Accuracy Check:
There should be four 6.5" x 6.5" squares from
the background fabric and another four from the second
star fabric.
