Notes:

  1. If printing these pages on a printer and you notice the edges cut off, then adjust your printer settings so that it prints "landscape" rather than "portrait".

  2. This quilt will only be available on the Web from now through August 1, 2009.  After that, the complete pattern will be sold.

  3. Be sure to read the guidelines at the bottom of this page. 

SUBUNIT 1:
Small Star with Dark Fabric Background
(3 small dark stars are needed; the cutting requirements below are for one small star only, so multiply each by 3 to do all of the cutting at one time)

  • Cut 4 - 1.5" x 1.5" squares from the dark background

  • Cut 1 - 1.5" x 1.5" square from the star 1 fabric

  • Cut 2 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares from the dark background

  • Cut 2 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares from the star 1 fabric

  1. Set aside all 5 of the 1.5" squares for now:

  2. Using one of the 2.5" squares from the dark background and one from the star 1 fabric, with right sides facing together, sew to make a HST.  Repeat this until you have a total of 4 HST.  Trim each to measure 1.5".  Press flat.  These 4 HST should look similar to this:

  3. Lay out Subunit 1 as shown below, being careful to place the HST in the correct positions, and using the 1.5" squares you set aside in step 1.

  4. Assemble Subunit 1 into rows from the layout in step 3, as shown:

  5. Assemble Subunit 1 into the small dark star, as shown below.  

  6. When finished, press Subunit 1 flat.  It should measure 3.5" x 3.5".

  7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 two more times, so that you end up with a total of 3 of these small, dark stars.

SUBUNIT 2:
Small Star with Star 2 Fabric Background
(3 small star 2 fabric stars are needed; the cutting requirements below are for one small star only, so multiply each by 3 to do all of the cutting at one time)

  • Cut 4 - 1.5" x 1.5" squares from the star 2 fabric

  • Cut 1 - 1.5" x 1.5" square from the star 1 fabric

  • Cut 2 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares from the star 2 fabric

  • Cut 2 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares from the star 1 fabric

  1. Set aside all 5 of the 1.5" squares for now:

  2. Using one of the 2.5" squares from the star 2 fabric and one from the star 1 fabric, with right sides facing together,  sew to make a HST.  Repeat this until you have a total of 4 HST.  Trim each to measure 1.5".  Press flat.  These 4 HST should look similar to this:

  3. Lay out Subunit 2 as shown below, being careful to place the HST in the correct positions, and using the 1.5" squares you set aside in step 1.

  4. Assemble Subunit 2 into rows from the layout in step 3, as shown:

  5. Assemble Subunit 2 into the small dark star, as shown below.  

  6. When finished, press Subunit 2 flat.  It should measure 3.5" x 3.5".

  7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 two more times, so that you end up with a total of 3 of these small, star 2 fabric stars.

SUBUNIT 3:
Small Star with Dark and Star 2 Fabric Background
(Only 1 needed)

  • Cut 1 - 1.5" x 1.5" square from the dark background

  • Cut 1 - 1.5" x 1.5" square from the star 2 fabric

  • Cut 1 - 1.5" x 1.5" square from the star 1 fabric

  • Cut 2 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares from the dark background

  • Cut 2 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares from the star 2 fabric

  • Cut 2 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares from the star 1 fabric

  1. Set aside the three 1.5" squares that you cut above.  They each measure 1.5" square and look like these:

  2. Using one 2.5" dark background and one 2.5" star 1 fabric, make 2 HST.  Once made, trim each of them to 1.5".  They should look like this:

  3. Using one 2.5" dark background and one 2.5" star 2 fabric, make 2 HST.  Once made, trim each of them to 1.5".  They should look like this:

  4. Using one 2.5" star 1 fabric and one 2.5" star 2 fabric, make 2 HST.  Once made, trim each of them to 1.5".  They should look like this:

  5. Assemble the pieces made in Subunit 3 as shown below. 

  6.  Using the rows sewn in step 5, assemble them as shown below.  When finished, press the block flat.  It should measure 3.5" x 3.5".

 

SUBUNIT 4:  Small Dark Background

  • Cut 10 - 3.5" x 3.5" squares

You should have 10 of these that are 3.5" square:

SUBUNIT 5:  Small Star 2 Fabric Background

  • Cut 6 - 3.5" x 3.5" squares

You should have 6 of these that are 3.5" square:

SUBUNIT 6:
Small Dark/Star 2 Fabric Background

  • Cut 1 - 4.5" x 4.5" squares from the dark fabric

  • Cut 1 - 4.5" x 4.5" squares for the star 2 fabric

  1. Make 1 HST by sewing each of these cut squares 1/4" on each side of the diagonal, right sides together.  When finished, trim to 3.5" square, then press.  You need 1 of these that is 3.5" square (you'll have one to spare!):
