A simple 4-rail block is one of the easiest of all blocks to piece.  It is a very versatile block that is usually made from two contrasting colors, but four strips, A, B, C, and D.  Of course, you can adjust the colors to anything and still have a super block.  In fact, this block is one that is perfect for using up scrap strips.  Or try a one color block, using values that range from light to dark.  The possibilities are endless!

Fabric Requirements for One Block

  1. Sew the two strips together as shown at the right.
  2. Press the block flat, with all the seams going in the same direction.  It should measure 1/2" larger than the finished size at this point.

Using this block alone, in a simple layout alternating the blocks, results as shown to the left.
Using this block with a solid alternating block of the same size results as shown to the right.

Using this block with a 4-Patch Block results as shown to the left.
Val, Oregon, used this pattern in a beginning quilt class she taught at her home in October 2006 ; here is the result!  Looks great, doesn't it?

Val stated, "Thank you very much for giving us permission to use the pattern, it went together so quickly and easily.  Perfect for beginner quilters!"

Thank you, Val, for sharing your class and photo with us!
