"All About
Blocks" is a work in progress, so be sure to check back often, as more and
more free block patterns in multiple sizes are added! All block
patterns that are linked to from the "Quilting
Passion Patterns" page are created by Terry Crawford, and
although many of them are traditional patterns, a great deal of them
are original designs. Please respect the

Attic
Window
Showcase |
This is a very versatile block in which you can showcase your appliqué
or showcase a "fussy cut". A "fussy cut" is a piece of fabric
that has been specifically cut in a strategic place in an effort to
feature a motif/pattern/picture.
In the traditional Attic Window block, the "Y" seam (the
seam where the two side rectangles meet at a 45° angle) is sewn
lastly. In this block, the "Y" seam has been
eliminated and replaced by a half-square triangle (HST), which is much
easier to sew.
The fabric requirements below for the squares are a little bit liberal
so that you can trim the HST to the exact size. Once you have made a block or two, you can adjust the
size of the squares to conserve fabric.

Instructions
- Cut each of the
pieces given in the chart above. If you are not
using a plain block for A, then prepare the block as to
how you want it (probably either "fussy cut" or appliquéd)
at this point. Refer to Figure 1 for an
example of an appliquéd square.
- Using the 2 - 3.5"
squares, make the HST. For help making HST, refer
to the HST
Tutorial. Once these are made, press them
flat and trim them to 2.5" x 2.5".
You should have 2. Refer to Figure 2 for an
example of the HST.
- Sew the C strips to
the left side of the A squares. Refer to
Figure 3 for an example. Press the seams away
from the squares.
- Sew the HSTs to the B
strips, as shown in Figure 4. Press the seams
toward the strips.
- Pin the HST strip
made in step 4 to the unit made in step 3, being careful
to match the seams of the strips.
- Sew the HST strip
onto the unit.
- Press the seams
toward the HST strip. Figure 5 shows an example of
the finished block.
- The unfinished blocks should
measure 8.5" x 8.5" each.
