Block designed by Patty (Ohio)
(See Diagram 3 for the original layout of this nine-patch)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Follow the directions for a simple Nine-Patch block to get started. Refer to Diagram 1 on the right.

For a "scrappy" block, cut eight (8) 4" x 4" squares of "scrappy" fabrics and one (1) 4" x 4" square of white on white (WOW). For this block, WOW should be in the center where the green fabric is in the sample.

  2. Carefully press the nine-patch completed in step 1 flat, making sure to use an up and down motion and not a side to side motion (which can stretch the fabric).

  3. Carefully press the nine-patch completed in step 1 in half, first one direction, then in the other (horizontally and vertically), so that the end result is that the nine-patch is pressed into four equal sections. Again, make sure to use an up and down motion when pressing.

  4. Carefully cut the nine-patch block vertically down the center, where it is pressed in half, then cut again across the block, horizontally where it is pressed in half. There is no need to move any pieces as you make these two (2) cuts.

  5. Rearrange the four (4) pieces of the nine-patch block so that they are positioned just as the photograph shows in Diagram 2.

  6. Once you have the proper placement of the pieces, re-sew the block together and press flat.

  7. Trim the block so that it measures 10.5" x 10.5" (or whatever measurement you need, in case you made a different size).

"Nine-Patch Variation" measures 10.5" x 10.5", unfinished.  It is a very simple, pieced block that looks much harder than it actually is, and even though it looks difficult to construct, it actually goes together quickly.  Instructions are easy to follow and understand.

This block is an excellent choice for using scraps of fabric left over from other projects and is a great block for a beginner or a seasoned quilter.
