For better understanding of
the cutting directions for this block, refer to the
Cutting Instructions.
This is
the only block in "All About Blocks" that is going to go
into detail on the cutting instructions. It is used as an
example of how to understand the others that give directions in a
similar style.
There are
two (2) tables below: Fabric Requirements and Cutting
Directions.
The Fabric
Requirements first shows you a diagram of the block, giving you
each template used. The table also tells you how many colors are in the
block, and how many pieces you need to cut from each
"template" and each color. It does not give sizes.
For example, the table below tells you that the Spools block:
 |
Uses two colors, Color 1 and
Color 2. |
 |
Uses three different templates
in the pattern, A, B, and C. |
 |
Needs 4 of Color 1 of the A
template, none for the B template, and 1 of the C template.
You also need 4 of Color 2 of the A template, 2 of the B template,
and none of the C template. |

The Cutting
Directions table gives the following information:
 |
It tells you how many pieces
to cut from each color. |
 |
It tells you the size of each
piece that you cut. |
 |
It gives you three different
size options. |

* Remember, even though you are
only cutting 2 squares, when you cut them on the diagonal, as
in the
Cutting Directions,
you end up with 4 triangles. |
Instructions
-
Cut the B squares into two triangles,
as shown below:

This results in two triangles for each B square that you
cut. In this block, you end up with four Color 1
triangles and four Color 2 triangles, for a total of eight
triangles.
-
Sew one triangle from each
color to one another, right sides together, along the
longest part (where it was cut on the diagonal), to form
half-square triangles (HST). Repeat this for all of
the sets of triangles. You end up with four HST, as
shown below:

-
Press the seams toward the
dark fabric in each of the HST.
-
Using the diagram below, lay
out the fabrics as illustrated. Be careful to
position the HST in the same direction as shown.
This creates the first vertical row.

Press the seams toward the

-
Template C is the second vertical
row.

-
Using the diagram below, lay out
the fabrics as illustrated. Be careful to position
the HST in the same direction as shown. This creates
the third vertical row.

using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, to form the pieced
row shown below.

Using this block alone, in a
simple layout results as shown to the left. |

(On-Point
Tutorial is available on this site!) is illustrated as shown to the
right. |

"All About Blocks" is a work in progress, so be sure to
check back often, as more and more free block patterns in multiple
sizes are added! All block patterns that are linked to from the
"Quilting
Passion Patterns" page are created by Terry Crawford, and
although many of them are traditional patterns, a great deal of them
are original designs. Please respect the
