Original block by Terry

"All About Blocks" is a work in progress, so be sure to check back often, as more and more free block patterns in multiple sizes are added!  All block patterns that are linked to from the "Quilting Passion Patterns" page are created by Terry Crawford, and although many of them are traditional patterns, a great deal of them are original designs.  Please respect the copyright of this site.  Thank you!

Pieced Heart
This is a simple, pieced block that results in a heart set on-point.  This block finishes at 9.25" x 9.25".
  1. Cut the pieces needed for the block according to the cutting chart at the right.
  2. Take the 9" square from the background and cut it diagonally, twice, first going one direction, then the other, in an "X" fashion.  This results in 4 triangles.  The inside edges are all on the bias, so handle these pieces as little as possible.
  3. Sew the 2.75" square to the 2.75" x 4.5" strip, end to end and right sides together.  Press the seam allowance toward the heart fabric.
  4. Sew the 4.5" x 6.75" rectangle to the unit in step 3, right sides together.  Press the seam allowance toward the heart fabric.  This completes the heart itself.
  5. Find the center of each of the four triangles along the longest side and either mark it or pin it.
  6. Find the center of each side of the heart unit sewn in step 4 and either mark it or pin it.
  7. Using one of the triangles, line up the center with the center of one of the heart sides.  It doesn't matter where you begin on the heart.  Carefully sew the triangle to the heart, right sides together.
  8. Using a second triangle, line up the center with the center of the opposite side of the heart.  Sew the triangle to heart, right sides together.  Refer to Figure 1 at the right.
  9. Press the block flat so that the seam allowances go toward the heart.
  10. Using a third triangle, line up the center with the center of one of the remaining sides of the heart.  Sew the triangle to heart, right sides together.
  11. Using the last triangle, line it up with the last side of the heart.  Sew the triangle to heart, right sides together.  Refer to Figure 2 at the right.
  12. Press the block flat, making sure the seam allowances are toward the heart.  Refer to Figure 3 at right.
  13. Trim each side of the block so that there is .25" beyond the heart seam.  In other words, make sure that you leave .25" in the background.   Refer to Figure 4 at right.
  14. Press the block flat.  The block should measure approximately 9.25" x 9.25".
