"All About Blocks" is a work in progress, so be sure to check back often, as more and more free block patterns in multiple sizes are added!  All block patterns that are linked to from the "Quilting Passion Patterns" page are created by Terry Crawford, and although many of them are traditional patterns, a great deal of them are original designs.  Please respect the copyright of this site.  Thank you!

Snowball

A Snowball block is a great alternate block!  It pairs well with a nine-patch!

 Cutting Directions for One Block

FABRIC 6" Finished 9" Finished 12" Finished

A

1 -  6.5" x 6.5" 1 -  9.5" x 9.5" 1 -  12.5" x 12.5"

B

4 -  2" 4 -  3" 4 -  4"

   Instructions

  1. Using the diagram at the right, lay out the fabrics as illustrated.
  2. Sew each square onto the corner of the A fabric, diagonally, with right sides together.  You can lightly draw a line with a pencil to make sure you sew straight, if you want.
  3. Repeat step 2 to finish the remaining three corners.
  4. Press the block flat.
  5. Optional:  You can trim the underneath sides of fabric from the corners if you wish, however, I find leaving it in place seems to keep the block more "square".

Using this block with a Nine-Patch block as an alternating block of the same size results as shown to the right.
