This calculator can be used to determine the size of squares needed to make the Edge triangles of an on-point quilt setting. Refer to the On-Point Setting Triangles Tutorial for more information.

To use this calculator, input answers for 1. and 2. below, then click outside of the input area to refresh the calculations.

CALCULATIONS
The true diagonal size, unrounded, measures:
The diagonal size, rounded, measures:
Each square should be cut to this size, at a minimum:

1) To convert the decimal to a fraction, refer to the Fractional Measurements Conversion Table, 2) I usually cut my squares 1 to 1.5 inches larger than calculated simply for breathing room when trimming, and 3) The default measurement for this calculator is for a 10 inch, finished block. The true diagonal size measures 14.14 inches and when this calculation is rounded up, it measures 14.25 inches. The rounded measure of 14.25 inches is the one used to then calculate the size of squares needed to make Edge Triangles in an on-point quilt. With the default of 10 inches, the minimum size of squares to cut is 15.75 inches. After cutting the squares, then diagonally cut each square into four (4) triangles by cutting across the square diagonally in both directions (in an "X" fashion).
