The World Wide Web, more commonly called WWW or W3, is a vast virtual space that was created in 1992 by Tim Berners-Lee. The Web incorporates graphics, typographic text and, most importantly, hypertext links; all viewable with a Web browser (the two (2) most common being Internet Explorer and Netscape). By the middle of 1993, there were approximately 130 sites on the WWW and by 1996, there were over 100,000 sites. This explosion of Web sites on the Internet makes the WWW a complex network of links that continues to expand at an amazing rate of growth. The Web uses three (3) new technologies:
Using HTML, almost anyone with a text editor (such as, Notepad) and an Internet site can build very visually interesting Web pages, that often resemble pages from a magazine. HTML tutorials, complete and easy to read, are available upon request. Email me for more information concerning these tutorials. WHAT IS THE WEB USED FOR?People are on the Web to conduct business, to exchange information, to express their creativity, to collaborate, and also to have fun. In 1995, over 37 million adults in North America alone had access to the Internet. Of those, 24 million actually used their access and 18 million used the access time to browse the WWW (Survey information used here is ©1995 CommerceNet Consortium/Nielsen Media Research). Over 50% of the sites on the Web are commercial (with a .com domain name). So, what's on the Web? Everything. If you need help finding something, use a good search engine, like Google.
